Alternative Tinnitus Treatment.

An article by Adrian Featherstone:

Most people who have found they are living with the ringing in the ears which
characterises the sounds of tinnitus will have been told by their medical practitioner that there is no known
effective tinnitus treatment.
The rationale behind that statement is that having established that there is no
physical cause of tinnitus, there is nothing for the doctor to treat. As the vast majority of people with the
condition fall into this category then most sufferers are left to look outside of mainstream medicine for some sort
of tinnitus relief.
Realising that tinnitus has come to live with you can be a frightening and
stressful time. You can’t help but listen to it. It’s always in the background. The volume and intensity may change
but it’s always there. The more you focus on the sounds of tinnitus the louder and more intrusive they
become.
Tinnitus is a condition affecting vast numbers of people across the world.
Perhaps not surprisingly there are almost as many offerings of tinnitus treatments, tinnitus cures and methods of
tinnitus relief as there are sufferers. Some of these methods of tinnitus treatment are little more than old wives
tales and some are based on fact.
The reality is that as there are no defined causes of tinnitus and that the
condition affects different people in different ways then what gives blessed relief to one person may do absolutely
nothing for another.
Popular among the recognised methods of alternative tinnitus treatment are the
ancient oriental arts of acupuncture and acupressure. The Chinese have practiced what we would now call alternative
medicine and treatment for centuries. Acupuncture involves controlling the flow of what is referred to as chi
energy by puncturing the skin with very fine needles at specific points on the body. This chi energy is a balance
of yin, the calm and passive female force and yang the stimulating and aggressive male force. The acupuncturist
maintains that a healthy body will have a healthy balance of these two unseen forces. The Japanese art of Shiatsu
follows a similar principle. However Shiatsu is an ancient form of acupressure so no needles are used.
Herbal remedies particularly traditional Chinese herbal remedies have been used
to great effect treating almost any and every complaint since antiquity. These natural and gentle remedies are
still widely used today and for some tinnitus sufferers have given a positive result.
Other alternative tinnitus treatments that certainly give some tinnitus
liberation to some people are Aromatherapy, Hypnotherapy and Indian Head Massage. What these forms of treatment
have in common is that they promote a sense of well being and relaxation. That is certainly a key element of
tinnitus relief. Stress is thought to contribute to or at least exacerbate tinnitus symptoms. Being able to relax
reduces levels of stress. Less stress and more focus on positives will start to push tinnitus into the
background.
There is no doubt that an holistic approach to overall health encompassing the
physical, emotional and psychological aspects of life will go a long way toward the eventual conquest of tinnitus.
All alternative tinnitus remedies are likely to have a very limited success unless they are a component part of an
overall holistic doctrine.
