Beginning The Search For A Tinnitus Cure
An article by Adrian Featherstone.
If you were able to ask a large group of sufferers who were looking
for a tinnitus cure to describe the arrival of a tinnitus sound in their lives, a great many
of them would tell you a remarkably similar story.
For so many of us, it won’t have been a case of waking up one
morning to a tinnitus sound of loud ringing or hissing in our ear or ears. It
was more probably a gradual realisation that this thing had crept into our lives by the back door. You see,
for most people the beginning of what we come to realise is the sounds of tinnitus, starts as
something almost insignificant. So insignificant in fact, that our brain doesn’t at first register it as being
a problem at all, even less a threat to our overall wellbeing.
It only becomes an issue when our consciousness recognises what our
sub consciousness had probably known for some time. That is, that this noise in our head is just not going away!
This is the sudden realisation that says “hello we have a problem here”. It is then that the tinnitus
sound comes to the forefront of our minds and into the front line of our thinking. It is then that a sense of panic
takes over. It is then that the volume of the sounds of tinnitus starts to turn itself up, and turn our lives
upside down.
Those of us who have lived with or are indeed who are living with
tinnitus sound know only too well that the more that tinnitus sound is focused on the louder or more intrusive it
becomes. This is the very first lesson we learn. But in that moment of realisation, this new tinnitus sound and the
threat it represents is just about the only thing we can think about. In consequence it just gets
louder.
The next consequence of living with a tinnitus sound constantly in
your head is that it interferes with your sleep. In the quiet of the night when your tinnitus sound is keeping you
awake that same tinnitus sounds seems to get louder and louder. There is no other sound to compete for your
attention. You don’t sleep and as a result you become tired and you become stressed.
The more you are stressed, the louder becomes your tinnitus sound.
An extremely vicious circle soon develops. This is a bad time and a bad place to be.
So, many of us then turn to our family doctors, only to be told that
we have tinnitus and that there is little or nothing that can be offered as a cure. Hopefully we do get to be
examined by an audiologist but most of us fortunately, do get told after examination that there is no physical
abnormality to concern ourselves about. We get told that tinnitus sound is just something that we will have to live
with.
The secret to survival and peace begins with closing your mind to
your tinnitus sound and in opening your mind to trying something new. There is no one certain tinnitus cure for
anyone. What we do have though are a range of approaches, any one of which might work for one person although
possibly having no effect for another.
These approaches include dietary awareness, hypnotherapy, exercise
regimes, relaxation, stress relief and countless others. Some of these will give some people an amount of temporary
relief from tinnitus sound, whilst others can potentially offer some sufferers permanent noise
reduction.
The need is to become positive and to have a positive plan to work
with. To structure such a plan so that it works for you when you don’t have the knowledge or experience is going to
be at best difficult. But there are some good books out there that have been put together by people who do have
that experience. Some of these books have been written by people who have been through the stress and frustration
of living with a constant tinnitus sound and have come out the other side.
Getting hold of such a book that gives a structure to work with in
combating tinnitus is a really good starting point. The value in the book will greatly exceed its cost by giving
hope, help and guidance. That has to be better than hiding under the bed covers, doing nothing and hoping it will
go away or maybe just grabbing at every ill-informed piece of advice that gets thrust at you from just about
everyone you meet, because that is what happens.
Well meaning as they all are, the only people who truly understand
living with tinnitus sound are those who can honestly say, “I’ve been there, I’ve suffered that and this is
what I did about it.” You too need to become someone able to say just that. To be able to say “I have
suffered with tinnitus, but I took positive action and as a result tinnitus sound no longer has any impact on my
life.”
Now that’s a much better place to be.
