Tinnitus Hypnosis.

An article by Adrian Featherstone:

The use of Tinnitus Hypnosis and Tinnitus Hypnotherapy in the
battle to help clear tinnitus symptoms has long been recognised as the most effective of the alternative treatments
available to the tinnitus sufferer.
The positive effect of tinnitus hypnosis is particularly successful where stress
is a factor in producing or exacerbating the symptoms of tinnitus. It has been known for decades that hypnotherapy
is capable of reducing stress and anxiety, as well as helping people deal with all manner of phobias.
Tinnitus hypnosis deals with the effect that tinnitus has on the sufferer rather
than the tinnitus itself. During the tinnitus hypnosis session the patient is drawn away from the inclination to
focus on the sounds of tinnitus and moved towards developing a greater tolerance of them. The effect of this is to
put the patient into a much more relaxed state of mind which in turn dilutes the effects of stress.
Stress is often the fuel driving a vicious spiral where tinnitus causes stress,
that stress causing louder tinnitus; the louder tinnitus causes greater stress and the greater stress causing even
louder tinnitus. Tinnitus hypnosis can begin to arrest this devastating spiral in very short order bringing some
much needed calm to the situation.
An extremely valuable aspect of using tinnitus hypnosis is that it can be very
effectively practiced at home with the aid of pre-recorded material. Studies of self hypnosis have demonstrated
average improvement rates at between 60 and 75 per cent for tinnitus sufferers.
With such a high success rate there is a strong argument for buying a
tinnitus reduction program using self
hypnosis techniques and putting aside an hour or so each day to devote to listening to it. The effect will not
only be a reduction in apparent tinnitus noise but potentially produce a general relaxation and stress
detoxification.
One reason that tinnitus hypnosis has not become part of the mainstream treatment
for the condition is the often negative perception of hypnotherapy. Hypnosis has been the subject of a number of
television shows where people from an audience have been hypnotised and persuaded to make themselves look rather
foolish. This has nothing to do with hypnotherapy and even less self hypnosis, but for most people that is the only
experience of hypnosis they have come into contact with.
Tinnitus hypnosis is an approach to this debilitating condition that many doctors
and therapists have used to great effect with people who have failed to respond to other treatments. Of all the
alternative therapies available to minimise the effects of tinnitus, hypnotherapy offers sufferers the highest
likelihood of success.
