Tinnitus Relief with Hobby Therapy

Probably the biggest issue for the tinnitus sufferer is the inability to find some respite to escape the sounds
of tinnitus even for a short while. If your ears are ringing they will ring whether you seek solace in your
favourite armchair in a quiet room, try to close your eyes to the sounds in your head and hope they will go away or
whether you try to hide in bed under the duvet. The sounds of tinnitus follow you with more certainty than the
cleverest private detective ever could!
In trying to hide or get away from those sounds of tinnitus you are inadvertently increasing your focus on them
big time. At the same time your stress levels will build as the frustration increases. Stress, frustration and that
focus always push up the volume level of the ringing inside your head. Once again that vicious circle starts
building. The circle must be broken.
Important to your success in controlling your tinnitus is to develop pathways to take your focus away from the
ringing in the ears that cause you so much distress. Young people have so much going on in their lives that I
sometimes wonder whether they would have time to notice symptoms of tinnitus if they had them! For us shall I say
more mature people though who live a somewhat more sedate lifestyle there is less to hold our attention. As we get
older the things we do become less frantic and generally rather quieter. It is when we are not focused on something
engaging the mind that those sounds of tinnitus start to claim their place in our attention once again.
So, in order to provide the best foundation for tinnitus relief it makes a lot of sense for us to fill our lives
with the things that hold and capture our interests after our days work is done. Enjoying our family time, meals
together, taking exercise and engaging with our young people provide great stimulation for the mind. Most tinnitus
sufferers find that at these times their tinnitus symptoms fade away and are all but forgotten. However, when all
this is done and the family has gone to bed or gone home, what then?
For my own part I decided to fulfil a lifelong ambition to learn to play the guitar! I found that having a
definite interest that I could turn to whenever there were empty slots in my day helped me enormously. Playing the
guitar had the added advantage that the music (at least that’s what I called it!) filled my hearing senses driving
out the sounds of tinnitus. I had been listening to Andrés Segovia playing classical guitar on cd as a tinnitus
masker for some time. I still find classical guitar to be soothing and excellent for reducing my stress.
I thoroughly recommend taking up an engrossing hobby as a form of tinnitus masker. For me playing my guitar
gives me the pleasure of learning and it played a useful part in my own tinnitus liberation. I would suggest that
if your hobby is a quiet one then listen to either a tinnitus masking cd or play something you find soothing in the
background.
I found my guitar learning course through Legacy Learning Systems who market a series of courses which I certainly
think are tailor made for the purpose. I recommend you to at least take a look at their product list through the
